Pollard, Soderbergh, and Zeta-Jones…IN 3-D.
I love it: Friday afternoon, and a story breaks that seems too good to be true, but is, in fact, true.
For his next directing effort, Steven Soderbergh is plotting a 3-D live-action rock ’n’ roll musical about Cleopatra.
He is courting Catherine Zeta-Jones to play the Egyptian queen and Hugh Jackman to play her lover, Marc Antony…
The music has been written by the indie rock band Guided by Voices, and the script is by James Greer, a former bass player for the band and an author.
I plan on buying about ten thousand tickets. How about you?
Purest Pop: “Cannibal Queen,” Miniature Tigers
Those involved in self-destructive behavior often have what they describe as a “rock-bottom moment,” when they realize the damage they’ve been doing to themselves and loved ones through their actions.
Last night, right after the “previously on One Tree Hill,” my wife and I seemed to simultaneously hit rock bottom, and without much fanfare, we decided to watch Mad Men instead, which was as great an hour of television as I’ve ever seen.
So no OTH recap this week. Instead, I have a special treat, a new song that you will love if you are conscious, and in possession of a brain and an ass to shake.
Miniature Tigers came out of nowhere and mauled my music-loving heart. Their first single, “Cannibal Queen” starts out with a guitar riff that makes it sound like it’s gonna be some kind of dark new wave pop thing, but then it steers hard toward BenKwellerLand and stays straight on the road toward the great state of Light, Breezy Indie Pop.
Catchy as the bubonic plague, especially this part about “la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la, love you, Cannibal Queen,” with this fuzzy trippy little guitar solo, it’s one of those songs. You know the type–you cannot help but clutch “Cannibal Queen” close to your chest and hug the living shit out of it.
I have a headache. You have some music to listen to. Enjoy.
“…if you’ll only get to know me”
Liz Phair on the Liz Phair record:
When I did the first pop record, I have to say it was fun for me. [Then-Capitol president] Andy Slater came in and we just decided to give it a shot. I felt like I had fun and learned a lot, although I certainly would not have made that record had I not been on a major.
I’m not sure I agree with your police work there, Liz.
